Forty thousand years ago, humans crawled into the dark and painted the world they lived inside of — bison, horses, aurochs, bears. They ground stone into pigment, mixed it with water, and put their hands to the wall.
We don't know exactly why. Archaeologists suspect it wasn't decoration. It may have been devotion.
OCHRE is a two-hour experience that begins where those first artists began — with a stone in your hand.
Working with local stones chosen for their color and character, you'll learn to crush and grind them into pigment, mix them with water, and use what you've made to create simple marks on paper. The process is slow, sensory, and surprisingly absorbing.
2 hrs · Limited to 6What to Expect
You'll be welcomed into an intimate setting with materials provided.
Your guide will offer brief context on the history and mystery of early pigment use and cave art — just enough to set the mood, not a lecture.
You'll spend time with your stone before you begin — observing it, holding it, noticing it — before the grinding begins.
The transformation from stone to pigment is tactile, meditative, and often surprising. Colors emerge that you didn't expect.
Once your pigment is ready, you'll use it to make marks on paper — freely, playfully, without instruction or expectation.
A short reflective pause closes the experience. No group critique, no comparison. Just your marks and what they stirred in you.
Wear something you don't mind getting dusty. Stone has opinions about clothes.
